Telangana University was established in 2006 with the primary objective of making higher education accessible to the educationally backward District of Nizamabad in Telangana. The University initially started with 6 courses and it was opened in the PG building of the Govt. Giriraj College at Dubba area in Nizamabad town before shifting to its primary campus in Dichpally on NH 44 on January 30th 2009. The establishment of the University was the first big step for the people of the region as it got the name of the state before its bifurcation from Andhra Pradesh. TU has 26 courses among the all new universities and ranks third after Osmania University and Kakatiya University. It is also the first among the newly formed Universities in the state to launch Ph.D programme in a total of 13 disciplines.
